The Tudor Black Bay Pro is a useful example. Its 39mm diameter suggests a compact watch, but its case is 14.6mm thick. That height, set against a relatively narrow footprint, can give it a substantial, almost block-like appearance on the wrist. A watch that covers less of the wrist does not necessarily look smaller. Diameter tells only half the story. The rest depends on the case’s shape and proportions, and how they relate to the wrist beneath it.

I have encountered this difference repeatedly over roughly 15 years of collecting. My wrist measures around 18cm in circumference. Had I used that measurement to establish a fixed limit on case diameter, several watches would never have entered my collection. Trying them on often overturned my expectations. Watches that sounded excessive on paper looked right, while smaller ones could seem awkwardly out of place. Those experiences gradually taught me to look at the whole form of a watch before drawing conclusions from its diameter.

There is nothing wrong with preferring smaller watches. But turning that preference into a rule applicable to every design makes it easy to reach a verdict before seeing the watch in question. The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider, Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Black Black, Panerai Luminor Venticinque and Tudor Pelagos Ultra all taught me to reserve judgment. Each qualifies as a large watch by diameter. None could be adequately understood from that number alone.

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider

At 45mm, the Excalibur Spider was hardly an obvious candidate for my wrist. Yet when I wore it, it looked more natural on me than the current 41mm Rolex Submariner. It was 4mm wider, but those additional millimeters did not translate directly into an excessive appearance.

To understand why, it helps to look at the watch from the side as well as from above. The Excalibur’s lugs curve distinctly downward, following the contour of the wrist. The case remains broad, but the way it wraps downward gives watch and arm a more continuous outline. It did not look like the large, separate object perched on my wrist that the measurement had led me to imagine.

The Excalibur is, of course, conspicuous. Its openworked movement and assertive architecture could never pass for a discreet dress watch. But a design that attracts attention is different from one that looks disproportionately large. The former is part of the character I enjoy here. The latter can only be judged by looking at the relationship between case and wrist. A watch’s flamboyance alone does not establish that it is the wrong size.

The Excalibur changed how I assess that relationship. Where 45mm once made me think only about the width of a case, I now consider how that width meets the curve of the wrist. Judging a watch’s size in isolation and judging its proportions when worn are different exercises.

Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Black Black

The Dark Side of the Moon measures 44.25mm in diameter. Had I restricted my shortlist to watches of 40mm or less, I would never have tried it on. In person, however, it looked considerably better balanced than the figure suggested. Wearing it corrected the image I had formed from its width alone.

The relatively short lugs played an important part. A broad case presents a different outline when its lugs do not extend far above and below it. What we see is the complete shape, including the lugs and strap, rather than a single line drawn across the center of the case. The Omega made that distinction clear. The exaggerated proportions I had associated with 44.25mm simply did not materialize on my wrist.

It is tempting at this point to replace diameter with lug-to-lug length, the distance between the opposing lug tips, as a new absolute standard. But that still reduces a three-dimensional form to one measurement. Two watches with the same overall length can sit very differently in relation to the wrist if one has horizontal lugs and the other’s curve downward. The prominence of the case flank and the angle at which the strap falls away also influence what we see.

We need to identify what makes a watch look large in the first place. A case that spreads widely across the wrist creates a different impression from one whose height dominates the profile. Diameter remains useful information, but it cannot settle how the watch will look before we have worn it.

Panerai Luminor Venticinque PAM02025

The Panerai also shows why the proportions within a design matter. The Luminor Venticinque PAM02025 has a 44mm case, and that scale is central to its appeal for me. The generous case, simple dial and substantial lugs work together to create the familiar Luminor form. Reducing the number would not necessarily improve their relationship.

Unlike the Omega, the Luminor has long lugs. Yet their broad, downward-curving shape follows the wrist, carrying the width of the case into its contour. Viewed from above, the broad case and lugs might appear simply to add more size. On the wrist, their forms connect. The Panerai showed me that shortening the lugs is only one way to bring a large watch into proportion.

The surface treatment also affected my impression. The darkened Brunito finish does not emphasize the broad surfaces with the sharp reflections of polished steel. Together with the blue dial, it gives the watch considerable presence without making every surface compete for attention. Finishing changes how the outline of a case is revealed, even when its dimensions remain the same. A measurement can be unchanged while the visual impression differs.

I like the way a Luminor occupies a generous portion of the wrist. That does not mean I want the watch to look disproportionately large on my arm. For me, the Venticinque gets that balance right. The dial and case are convincingly proportioned, while the lugs connect that breadth to the wrist’s curve. I cannot assume that making it smaller would make it look better on me.

Tudor Pelagos Ultra

I was not immediately inclined to buy the Pelagos Ultra. The description of a substantial 43mm dive watch brought the Rolex Deepsea to mind. I had owned a Deepsea and found it too large for my wrist. I expected a watch of similar character to produce a similar result.

But my judgment of the Deepsea did not transfer neatly to the Pelagos. The Ultra does not have the dramatically curved lugs of the Roger Dubuis or Panerai. Its profile is comparatively straight, and its lugs are broad. If those earlier watches had taught me the value of curved lugs, this one showed that the lesson could not become a rule. Contrary to my expectations, the Ultra looked balanced when I put it on.

Over time, I came to understand that impression through the proportions of the watch as a whole. The snowflake hands and substantial markers looked entirely at home within the broad dial. There was none of the awkwardness of a case that appeared to have grown while its other elements were left behind. The parts were in scale with one another, and that relationship held on my wrist. To my eye, 43mm gave the design the space it needed.

This also challenges the assumption that a smaller watch is necessarily a better-proportioned one. On a particular wrist, the thick case of a 39mm Black Bay Pro can look bulky, while the broader 43mm Pelagos Ultra can appear more natural. Diameter alone cannot determine which looks better. That depends on how width, height and the proportions of the individual elements relate to the wearer. A smaller diameter does not guarantee a successful result, any more than a larger one guarantees imbalance.

I also put the Ultra on friends with slimmer wrists and found that it looked good on them. My own wrist circumference of around 18cm could not fully explain those results. This does not mean the watch will suit everyone. It does suggest that matching a particular wrist measurement to a prescribed diameter misses differences that become apparent when the watch is actually worn.

The Ultra is also a watch I sold and later brought back into the collection. During ownership, the dial’s surface and the overall proportions left a more lasting impression than my initial concern about size. I chose it again because I liked the watch that those dimensions created. Its 43mm diameter was not a concession I had agreed to make.

I now resist drawing a boundary around diameter before considering the watch itself. I look at how widely the case covers the wrist, how prominently it rises in profile, and the outline formed by the lugs and bracelet or strap. On the same wrist, one watch can look naturally in place while another stands out as an awkward block. Once I have seen that difference, calling a watch “too large” has a specific basis.

Looking straight down during a fitting is not enough. Turn the wrist to examine the profile. Studying a watch close up can give a different impression from seeing yourself wearing it. We cannot spend months owning every watch we consider, but we can give ourselves an opportunity to see what the specification sheet leaves out.

What I want is a watch that looks proportionate on my wrist. That means allowing for the possibility that 45mm may look entirely appropriate, while 39mm may look too large. Diameter is measured on the watch. Proportion is judged on the wrist.

The Blackout XP1 Tourbillon LT Centurion was my first tourbillon. I initially saw it as an affordable route into a complication I had admired for years. After several months, however, it became something more instructive: a test of what I would continue to value once the novelty of the rotating cage had worn off. The Centurion introduced me to the tourbillon. The XP1 Ultimate showed me which parts of that experience I wanted to keep.

Blackout requires a little context. The company began in 2006 by customizing existing luxury watches before changing ownership and shifting toward proprietary models in 2022. Its modern identity is centered on the XP1, a large tonneau-shaped watch combining forged carbon with an exposed flying tourbillon. The references are not difficult to identify. Richard Mille established this combination of shape, material and mechanical theater at the highest end of the market, where complicated models can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Blackout approaches that same broad genre from a very different price point. Most XP1 models use what the company calls a hybrid movement: an Asian-produced tourbillon base that is dismantled and inspected in Geneva, fitted with selected Swiss components, then assembled and tested in the brand’s workshop. It is not Swiss Made, nor does Blackout claim otherwise. That construction is what allows the XP1 Centurion to offer a forged-carbon flying tourbillon for US$3,700.

The Ultimate occupies the other side of the argument. It retains the basic XP1 concept but replaces the hybrid caliber with a fully Swiss Made, hand-wound flying tourbillon from DW&Co. The price rises accordingly to US$7,950.

On paper, this looks like a simple hierarchy: the Centurion is the affordable version, while the Ultimate is the better one. Owning both taught me that the distinction is more complicated. The Centurion is not merely an unfinished Ultimate, and the Ultimate is not automatically worth the additional US$4,250 to every buyer. They answer similar desires at different stages of collecting.

I had long wanted a complicated Richard Mille but could never realistically justify spending a six-figure sum on a single watch. That same attraction previously led me to own the Hublot Spirit of Big Bang twice. Both Hublots delivered the tonneau case, contemporary materials and openworked appearance I wanted, but neither became a keeper. The buckle attached to the Velcro strap was simply too uncomfortable during an entire day of wear.

I did not intend to buy the Centurion when I first tried it on. That changed almost immediately. Its forged-carbon case felt far more substantial than its price suggested, while the soft rubber strap and folding clasp made it more comfortable than either of my Hublots. The 44mm-by-52mm case is 14.8mm thick and weighs only 110 grams, giving it considerable presence without placing much weight on the wrist. Even on my approximately 18cm wrist, it felt large rather than unmanageable.

More importantly, the carbon did not feel like a compromised version of a luxury material. Its texture and solidity compared favorably with the cases of considerably more expensive watches I had owned. The Centurion did not persuade me because it resembled something costly from across the room. It became persuasive when I handled it.

Then there was the tourbillon. For the first few months, watching it rotate through the dial provided exactly the experience I had hoped for. The Centurion made an otherwise distant complication immediate, wearable and surprisingly practical. At first, that seemed sufficient.

But novelty has a way of revealing what comes after it.

The longer I owned the Centurion, the more my attention moved away from the tourbillon itself and toward everything surrounding it. The prominent X-shaped bridges across the dial gradually became the first thing I saw whenever I checked the time. The watch was openworked, but not open enough for my taste. Rather than drawing my eye into the movement, the X appeared to sit between me and the mechanism I had bought the watch to enjoy.

I also became increasingly conscious of the movement’s finishing and origins. This was not because I believe an Asian foundation automatically makes a caliber inferior. The Centurion’s entire value proposition depends upon that foundation. Without it, Blackout could not offer the same complication at US$3,700.

The problem was more personal. In an openworked watch, the movement is not simply an engine hidden behind the dial. It is the dial. Its architecture and finishing are visible every time the watch is worn, making them part of the emotional experience rather than footnotes on a specification sheet. Once the excitement of owning my first tourbillon settled, I realized that I wanted a movement whose appearance could sustain the same scrutiny as the case.

That realization eventually led me to sell the Centurion. It also explains why I did not immediately buy the Ultimate when the opportunity first arose. I initially chose the Tudor Pelagos Ultra instead, partly because I suspected that installing a Swiss movement inside the same basic watch would not solve the design fatigue that had pushed me away from the original. A country of origin cannot repair an incoherent composition.

What ultimately brought me back was the realization that the Ultimate was not merely the Centurion with a more prestigious movement.

The underlying case concept remains familiar, preserving the lightness of the forged carbon, the comfortable strap and the exaggerated tonneau silhouette that first made the XP1 appealing. The architecture surrounding the movement, however, has been reconsidered. The Ultimate’s more extensively openworked construction removes the X-shaped structure that had come to dominate my view of the Centurion.

That distinction became immediately apparent once I began wearing it. With the Centurion, my eye tended to stop at the X. With the Ultimate, it travels through the caliber. The cleaner structure creates greater depth and allows the flying tourbillon to become the center of the composition rather than one spectacle competing with another.

The Swiss Made designation matters to me, but not as a magic phrase. If the Ultimate had retained the same obstructive architecture, a different movement origin alone would not have changed my opinion. It succeeds because the provenance arrives with something tangible: more satisfying finishing, cleaner construction and a dial that finally allows the mechanism to speak for itself.

Owning the Ultimate also confirmed that the basic XP1 platform had never been the problem. I still appreciate the lightness of the case, the tactile quality of the carbon and the comfort of the strap. What eventually pushed me away from the Centurion was not the concept, but the feeling that its execution stopped just short of what I wanted.

Whether crossing that final distance is worth US$4,250 depends entirely on the buyer. The Ultimate is not more than twice as comfortable, nor does its tourbillon rotate with more than twice the drama. Value in watchmaking rarely follows such tidy arithmetic.

For a first-time tourbillon owner, the Centurion may remain the more compelling proposition. It delivers the forged-carbon case, bold wrist presence and mechanical spectacle that define the XP1 for US$3,700. It also expresses Blackout’s original purpose more clearly: bringing a complication that many enthusiasts encounter only through display cases and photographs into a realistically attainable price range.

The US$7,950 Ultimate addresses a different collector. It is for someone who has moved beyond asking whether a watch contains a tourbillon and begun asking how the entire watch has been constructed around it. The additional money does not merely purchase a Swiss passport for the movement. It buys the more coherent architecture and higher level of execution that I found myself wanting only after living with the original.

The two watches should not be understood simply as inexpensive and expensive versions of the same XP1. The Centurion explains why Blackout exists. The Ultimate demonstrates how far that idea can be taken.

I am glad the Centurion was my first tourbillon. Had I moved directly to the Ultimate, I might have reduced its appeal to the words “Swiss Made” and missed the more meaningful difference. Owning both taught me that provenance matters only when it produces something tangible on the wrist.

The Centurion made the complication attainable. The Ultimate made the watch feel complete.

It was a genuine bezel insert for a Rolex Submariner ref. 16610LV, except the watch waiting for it was a black-bezel 16610LN. At 16, this struck me as an elegant solution. I loved my first Rolex, wanted a Kermit, and did not want to part with one to acquire the other. Change the insert, keep the attachment, enjoy the color. Every component was genuine.

The logic was not.

Once fitted, the watch looked closer to what I wanted and somehow felt further from it. The problem was no longer color. It was an identity. My Submariner had acquired the Kermit’s most obvious feature without becoming a Kermit, and I had acquired just enough knowledge to care.

That bezel taught me what the watch-collecting rabbit hole actually is. It is not simply the accumulation of watches, but the accumulation of distinctions. Once those distinctions become visible, ownership turns into comparison.

Before reference numbers, a watch could simply be beautiful. My first luxury watch was an 18-karat rose-gold Baume & Mercier Classima with a sunburst guilloché dial. I was 16 and lacked the vocabulary to assess its execution or place it within a hierarchy. The dial mesmerized me, the gold felt precious, and that was enough.

This was not necessarily a purer form of appreciation. It was merely less organized. I saw the watch in front of me without also seeing every alternative arranged beside it.

The Classima taught me to admire watches. The Submariner taught me to compare them.

My first Rolex was a thoroughly beaten-up Submariner ref. 16610LN, a Z-series example with no box or papers. It cost around US$4,000, which requires some explanation when the buyer is a high school sophomore. I was an international student with extremely generous parents and a monthly allowance of roughly US$3,000. This was a privilege, not a teenage masterclass in finance. I saved for a while, spent nearly everything at once, and lived on ramen and dining-hall food for the next few months.

Honestly, those were good months.

I would like to say I chose the Submariner after a sophisticated assessment of its design, history, and credentials as a professional dive watch. In reality, the Rolex name mattered. It represented status and success, while I was a normal 16-year-old who had achieved neither. I had homework. But I also had a Rolex.

The attachment that followed became more personal than the status it projected. Battered and incomplete, the watch felt intensely mine. At first, it was simply my Submariner.

Then I discovered the green one.

The ref. 16610LV, better known as the “Kermit,” was not a limited edition, but it was considered rarer and more collectible than the regular black model. Its maxi dial had larger hour markers, while its aluminum bezel insert was green rather than black. The changes were modest. Their effect on my satisfaction was not.

Before encountering the LV, I owned a Submariner. Afterward, I owned the regular Submariner. The watch itself had not changed; its position had. Mine was now a 16610LN, sitting below a 16610LV that appeared more distinctive, more desirable, and somehow more complete. A single letter had rearranged the hierarchy in my head.

Knowledge did not make my Rolex worse. It made the alternative impossible to ignore.

That was why the bezel modification could never work. As a design solution, it did. The green gave the watch exactly the playfulness I thought the all-black version lacked. As a collector’s solution, it failed completely. The watch still lacked the LV’s maxi dial and remained a 16610LN. Both the watch and the insert were genuine; it was their relationship that was wrong.

From across the room, close enough. Inside my head, not even close.

I had thought I wanted a green bezel. What I wanted was an LV.

This distinction sounds ridiculous outside watch collecting, and perhaps it should. Yet it exposes the difference between liking a design and wanting a reference. Collectors do not respond only to appearance. We care about originality, factory configuration, and the biography of an object—qualities that may be invisible on the wrist but still shape how we see it.

Reference numbers appear to be neutral cataloging tools. In practice, they preserve decisions about which components belong together, while also teaching us where one object ends and another begins. They can clarify taste, but they can also dictate it. At 16, I had learned enough to recognize the hierarchy without knowing how to separate that hierarchy from my own judgment.

I eventually sold the 16610LN to fund another watch. My appetite had expanded faster than my budget, particularly as luxury-watch prices rose and collecting became more popular. I regret the decision now, although hindsight operates with an imaginary bank account. At the time, selling one watch was the only realistic way to experience another.

You can buy the same reference again. You cannot buy back your first one.

When I finally bought a genuine 16610LV in 2022, the reasons I valued it had changed. After 15 years of collecting and experience with almost every modern Rolex model, rarity no longer carried the argument. The design did.

The green aluminum bezel softens the seriousness of the familiar Submariner, while the maxi dial gives it greater presence without making it louder. Its 40mm case, slimmer neo-vintage lugs, and close-fitting Oyster bracelet sit naturally on my 6.9-inch wrist. Modern Rolex watches feel more robust, and their clasps and micro-adjustment systems are easier to live with. They are better engineered. I am not convinced they are always better drawn.

The Kermit still looks like a tool watch that happened to put on bright green sneakers. The irony is that the details I once valued as signs of rarity are now the details I value for their restraint. At 16, I wanted the more collectible Submariner. At 31, I prefer the better-resolved one.

It would be easy to conclude that collector knowledge corrupted the uncomplicated fascination I felt for the Classima. That would be too simple. Knowledge created the comparison between the LN and LV, but it also allowed me to move beyond collectibility and understand why the Kermit works on its own merits. The danger was never learning more. It was allowing what I learned to tell me what I should want.

The genuine LV may be the better-resolved design, but it cannot replace the battered LN. Another Z-series 16610LN would occupy the same position in the Rolex catalog, yet it would not be the watch I wore through high school—the one bought with an excessive allowance and paid for, in my own small way, with months of ramen.

A reference number can explain why one watch differs from another. It cannot tell me which one will matter.

I thought I was changing a Submariner when I fitted that green bezel. The more lasting change ran in the opposite direction: my Rolex became an LN, the green one became an LV, and I became someone for whom a single letter could unsettle an otherwise complete object.

I eventually bought the right reference. The wrong one remains the Rolex I miss.

That seems like the right place to begin.

So far, 2026 has brought heavy churn to my watch box. Three watches remain in my personal collection today: a second-generation Tudor Black Bay 58, a Tudor Pelagos Ultra, and a Panerai Luminor Venticinque PAM02025. The Datejust still belongs to the family, but it explains why any of the other three matter to me. Not one of these watches stayed because it occupies the highest rung of some imaginary hierarchy. Each stayed because it resolved a tension I could no longer ignore.

Tudor Black Bay 58

I bought and sold the original Black Bay 58 three times.

The attraction was never difficult to explain. Its 39mm case, gilt accents, snowflake hands, aluminum bezel insert, and matte, vintage-inspired finish felt distinct from the polished cases and glossy ceramic bezels that dominate the modern luxury dive-watch category. For a long time, if you wanted that combination of compact proportions and subdued surfaces, the most obvious choices seemed to be either a neo-vintage, five-digit Rolex or the Black Bay 58. Tudor’s historical ties to Rolex supplied context, but the watch had more than enough character to stand on its own.

The reason I kept selling it was equally simple: I could not get past the faux rivets on the bracelet. Artificially aged lume can work when it serves the whole design. The decorative rivets did the opposite for me, making an otherwise convincing watch feel less honest. I tried aftermarket Jubilee- and Oyster-style bracelets, but neither was comfortable enough to become a permanent answer. Comfort is not a detail I am willing to negotiate. A watch can look perfect in a photograph and still fail over the course of an ordinary day.

In 2026, a century after “The Tudor” trademark was registered, the brand marked the occasion with a broad program of new releases and updates, including a revival of the historical Monarch name. Against that background, the revised black Black Bay 58 was easy to read as an incremental change. It retained the 39mm diameter and 200-meter water resistance, but adopted a redesigned case measuring 11.7mm thick. Inside, the METAS-certified manufacture caliber MT5400-U offers a 65-hour power reserve. The dial text was reduced to two lines, while the hour and minute hands, lollipop seconds hand, bezel, crown, and case profile were all subtly reworked. Most important for me, the watch became available on an articulated five-link bracelet with Tudor’s tool-free T-fit clasp—and no faux rivets.

No single change transforms the watch. Together, they transform the experience of wearing it. The cleaner dial restores space, the slightly slimmer case settles more naturally, and the five-link bracelet gives the Black Bay 58 the comfort and refinement its proportions always promised. T-fit also removes the old choice between wearing the bracelet slightly too tight or slightly too loose.

The new Black Bay 58 is not a reinvention, and that is precisely why it works. Tudor did not replace the original idea. It removed the details that had kept me from living with it. Sometimes a successor does not need to become a different watch; it only needs to eliminate the reasons you kept selling the old one.

Tudor Pelagos Ultra

The Pelagos Ultra made the opposite argument. Where the Black Bay 58 draws people in with restraint, the Ultra announces itself with a 43mm-by-14.5mm case made from Grades 2 and 5 titanium, a helium escape valve, and ISO-tested water resistance to 1,000 meters. Its METAS-certified MT5612-U movement runs for 65 hours, while enlarged markers and two colors of lume turn legibility into something close to overkill. None of that sounded compatible with my 7.1-inch wrist.

When the Pelagos Ultra reached Tudor boutiques in South Korea, I went to see it out of curiosity rather than intent. I had already dismissed it on paper. A 43mm professional dive watch seemed destined to be capable, impressive, and completely wrong for me.

Then I put it on.

The Ultra wears far better than its diameter suggests because the lugs curve down and settle around the wrist instead of holding the case flat above it. Titanium keeps the weight under control, while the shape distributes what remains evenly. It is not a small watch pretending to be smaller. It is a large watch whose proportions have been properly considered. Size is a measurement. Bulk is a result.

The dial made the stronger case over time. Its matte black surface has a fine-grained texture, and the sky-blue Pelagos signature introduces just enough color without breaking the tool-watch character. The snowflake hands and blocky markers look entirely at home at this scale. The three-link titanium bracelet also avoids the faux rivets that had repeatedly driven me away from the original Black Bay 58, while combining T-fit adjustment with a proper diver’s extension.

I did, in fact, sell my first Pelagos Ultra. The decision had less to do with the watch’s design than with the bracelet pulling at my wrist hair often enough to become irritating. Later, wearing my Black Bay 58 with its clasp positioned slightly farther under the wrist showed me how much a small change in fit could help. More tellingly, once the Ultra was gone, I missed it. I eventually sold my Panerai Luminor 8 Days GMT PAM00233 to bring the Tudor back.

That is the clearest verdict I can give it. Some watches make their strongest argument only after they leave. The Pelagos Ultra did.

Panerai Luminor Venticinque PAM02025

Panerai leaves little room for indifference. The cases are bold, the proportions uncompromising, and the crown-protecting bridge announces itself before almost anything else. You either recoil from the entire proposition or eventually understand why owners speak about Panerai as though it were a category of its own.

My own descent into that category was fast. After more than a decade of collecting watches from familiar names such as Rolex, Tudor, and Omega—with the occasional oddball to keep things interesting—I bought a Luminor PAM00915. It was meant to be one experiment. Within a month, I had also bought a Radiomir Otto Giorni.

The two watches presented inverse compromises. The Luminor wore remarkably well, its cushion case sitting flat and planted while the crown guard kept the crown away from my wrist. But its fully polished case made an already assertive design feel too shiny for the way I dress and move through an ordinary week. The Radiomir solved that aesthetic problem with a dark Brunito steel case and brown fumé dial, yet its oversized crown dug into my wrist often enough to change how frequently I wore it.

One wore right but looked wrong. The other looked right but hurt.

That tension sent me searching for the comfort of a Luminor combined with the Radiomir’s Brunito finish and the visual depth of a fumé dial. Panerai’s catalog is built on variations, but that exact combination proved surprisingly elusive. The one reference that kept resurfacing was the Luminor Venticinque PAM02025.

Created for the 25th anniversary of the Paneristi community and limited to 1,000 pieces, the PAM02025 uses a 44mm Brunito steel Luminor case, a blue gradient sandwich dial, and a heavily domed sapphire crystal that recalls the distortion of vintage Plexiglas. I registered my interest at the boutique and received the allocation call three or four months later.

The Brunito finish is the foundation of the watch. Panerai applies a dark PVD coating to the steel and then reworks it by hand to create an uneven, aged effect. It is not stealthy in the clinical manner of flat black ceramic, nor does it ask to remain pristine like a polished steel case. It has presence, but it also looks ready to record wear.

The crystal and dial make the finish feel deliberate rather than cosmetic. The pronounced dome softens the Luminor’s broad planes and gently distorts the dial at oblique angles. Beneath it, the blue fumé surface runs from a rich, inky center to near-black at the edge. Together with the sandwich construction and beige luminous material, it adds depth without compromising the clarity on which a Panerai dial depends.

The smoked sapphire caseback reveals the hand-wound P.6000. It is a straightforward caliber—hours, minutes, stop seconds, a 21,600-vph frequency, and a three-day power reserve—presented beneath broad, horizontally brushed metallic bridges. The specifications matter, but the real achievement is cohesion.

Most importantly, the PAM02025 solved the ergonomic problem that began the search. The Luminor bridge prevents the crown from becoming a pressure point, making the watch comfortable despite its scale. It gives me the finish and dial that made the Radiomir special without asking me to tolerate the reason I stopped wearing it.

It is not a compromise between my first two Panerais. It is the Panerai I had been trying to assemble in my head.

That brings me back to the flash of yellow gold in my parents’ wedding photograph.

The Datejust originally belonged to my maternal grandfather. He died while I was still in elementary school, but stories about him have always traveled freely around our dinner table. According to our family history, he built his life in public service and business, serving as South Korea’s minister of foreign affairs during the Park Chung-hee era before later holding a senior role at Daewoo. My father remembers that he owned several Rolex watches over the years, not as an enthusiast in the modern sense, but because they were dependable objects suited to the pace of his life.

The precise circumstances in which he acquired this Datejust have been lost. In South Korea in the 1980s, however, a solid-gold Swiss watch was a far less ordinary purchase than it is today. My grandfather traveled often and had the means to buy one, but what remains is not a receipt or a boutique story. It is the decision to give the watch to my father on his wedding day, following a practice common in Korean families of exchanging significant gifts between the two sides of a marriage.

The watch itself is an 18k yellow-gold Datejust with a fluted bezel and a linen dial. That dial is the detail I remember most clearly from childhood. Its woven texture changes with the light, producing fine relief and tiny shadows that photographs rarely capture. It was my first lesson that a watch is not simply a color or a case shape. Personality emerges from accumulated decisions about proportion, texture, and surface.

Then there is the bracelet.

When my father received the watch, it was fitted to an aftermarket yellow-gold President-style bracelet. Rolex created the President bracelet for the launch of the Day-Date in 1956 and has also used it on precious-metal Datejust models. The unusual part here is not the basic pairing of that bracelet shape with a Datejust. It is that this particular bracelet was not supplied by Rolex—and that no one in the family knows why my grandfather chose it.

My father, who does not obsess over watches the way I do, can offer only possibilities. Perhaps my grandfather preferred the visual weight of the semicircular links. Perhaps he associated the design with status and felt that a wedding called for something more imposing. Perhaps it was simply what the jeweler could provide in time. I wish I could ask him. I cannot.

As I grew older and fell deeper into watches, that unexplained choice changed the way I thought about originality. Collectors often discuss authenticity as though the objective were to fix a reference in amber: the correct dial, bracelet, clasp stampings, or it does not count. There are good reasons for that precision. Collecting needs a common language, and market value depends on it. Family watches live in a different register. They are not only case numbers. They are memory machines.

An aftermarket bracelet may lower an auction estimate, but in our house it records the way my grandfather wanted the watch to look and the way he wanted it to sit on my father’s wrist on his wedding day. Whatever its origin, that decision has accompanied the watch for as long as my family has known it. It is not factory-original. It is original to the story.

The watch also shaped my own eye. The linen dial taught me to look for texture, not only shine. The fluted bezel taught me that repetition, executed consistently, can become its own form of decoration. Yellow gold taught me that materials pass in and out of fashion, but presence endures. The bracelet taught me to leave room for anomalies—to ask why a choice was made and to trace taste not only through catalogs, but through people and moments.

If you are expecting an ending in which I “correct” the watch by sourcing another bracelet and returning it to a presumed factory configuration, this is not that story. Doing so would erase one of the few fingerprints my grandfather left on an object I can still hold. I believe in sympathetic restoration, good watchmakers, and replacing fatigued parts so a watch can survive for its next wearer. I also believe that watches record us.

The best thing I can do is keep this one running, keep it in the family, and tell the truth about it. That distinction—between what a watch is on paper and what it becomes through use—is what I want to explore here. The Black Bay 58 stayed because Tudor removed the detail that kept ending the relationship. The Pelagos Ultra returned because its absence made its strengths clearer. The Panerai stayed because it reconciled two compromises. The Datejust has endured because its anomaly became part of the inheritance.

Three watches in my box answer questions. The family Rolex keeps asking one: Why that bracelet?

I have come to like not knowing.
